CBD Stone Removal

CBD stone removal involves the extraction of stones, known as calculi, from the common bile duct (CBD), a crucial part of the biliary system responsible for transporting bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. When stones obstruct the CBD, they can cause significant discomfort and complications such as jaundice or pancreatitis. Several techniques are employed for CBD stone removal, primarily through endoscopic procedures like Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). During ERCP, specialized tools are used to capture and remove stones from the CBD under fluoroscopic guidance. Additionally, procedures such as Endoscopic Papillary Balloon Dilation (EPBD) or Mechanical Lithotripsy may be utilized to facilitate stone extraction. In cases where endoscopic methods are not feasible or unsuccessful, surgical options like cholecystectomy with CBD exploration may be necessary. CBD stone removal aims to alleviate symptoms, restore bile flow, and prevent complications, with the choice of method dependent on factors such as stone size, patient health, and the expertise of the medical team.
